The Graduate Education at the School of Life Sciences, Peking University
The School of Life Sciences of Peking University has a history more than 90 years. It has 76 doctoral degree student supervisors, including 4 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 13 Changjiang scholar professors and 16 Distinguished Young Scholars of National Science Fund of China. The national second level disciplines of biology such as Botany and Biochemistry are among the earliest doctoral programs approved by the Academic Degree Office of the State Council in 1981. In 1999, the Biology discipline of the School had became one of the national first level disciplines. The national second level disciplines of biology at the School, with experienced faculty in cultivating talents, such as Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Physiology and Biotechnology, are comprehensive, historied, explorative and innovative, which makes the School enjoy great prestige both at China and aboard.
The doctoral programs of Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Physiology, and Cell Biology at the School of Life Sciences of Peking University are nationally evaluated by Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China and recognized as one of the national key disciplines. Since 1996, the School had received the supports from the “211 Project” of Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China and “985 Project for construction of world first-class University” of Peking University, which had highly improved and provided the basal equipments and facilities for scientific research and teaching of the School. The conditions of scientific research of the School were optimized and a better atmosphere for academic and teaching were also created, which had raised the level of teaching even further. There are three Key Laboratories in the School, linking up with the discipline. They are “the State Key Laboratory of Protein Engineering and Plant Genetic Engineering”, “the State Key Laboratory of Biomembrane and Membrane Biotechnology” and “the Key Laboratory of Cell Proliferation and Differentiation of Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China”. According to the development trends and patterns of the School and the needs for development of the country, combing with the conditions and long-term accumulation of the university, the School had formed several characteristic national second level disciplines including Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Physiology, Plant Molecular Biology and Development Biology, Conservation Biology, Biophysics, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology and Engineering.
